About the company

WCS New York Aquarium is part of an effort to save wildlife that began 120 years ago with the New York Zoological Society, an organization based on science and hope that later became the Wildlife Conservation Society.

If you’ve ever been to visit or are a fan of Animal Planet Zoo, you’re probably familiar with the fascinating field research conducted by aquarium researchers in New York. Conservationists in our New York Aquarium Conservation Program strive to protect and restore endangered species and habitats, promote smart marine planning to ensure wildlife has a place in our bustling waters, and build ecological resilience in coastal and offshore habitats. The New York Aquarium is a local leader in marine conservation and works to protect safe places where people and wildlife can share the waters around the island city.

Through acoustic/satellite tagging and monitoring of a variety of sharks and large cetaceans in New York’s seascape, we help guide and inform fisheries and management policy. As part of our ongoing efforts to restore the Bronx River, we conduct long-term ecological monitoring and develop management plans for American eel and river herring.

We help protect critical habitats, including Hudson Canyon, an underwater wonder that rivals the Grand Canyon in size and grandeur. It is home to a variety of fish, marine mammals, invertebrates and cold-water corals. This includes the establishment of the first National Marine Sanctuary in the mid-Atlantic. Our citizen science program encourages the public to explore local beaches and waters and provides data to support marine biodiversity.
